Simons Bauer Trail Blaine County, Idaho 2023

About the Trail

We constructed this 0.9-mile multi-use trail within the Wood River Land Trust’s Simon Bauer Preserve, providing low-impact access from the trailhead to a scenic overlook. The alignment traverses sensitive wetland habitat and was designed to minimize disturbance while maintaining year-round durability.

Through the wetland corridor, the trail is elevated on a boardwalk system supported by diamond piers, allowing natural hydrology and vegetation to remain intact while avoiding soil compaction and excavation in saturated soils. The remainder of the trail consists of a crushed granite tread, providing a firm, accessible surface with minimal maintenance needs.

The trail features gentle grades, with 34 feet of total ascent and 77 feet of descent between elevations of 5,354 and 5,312 feet. Design emphasizes sustainability, habitat protection, and compatibility with seasonal wildlife management, including annual winter closures to support elk habitat.
